ROLEX AND BENZINGER STARS OF THE SHOW AT BONHAMS OPENING WATCH SALE

Watches and Wristwatches including the Collection of a European Nobleman
21 Feb 2017
London, Knightsbridge

An exceptional Rolex stole the show at Bonhams 21st February Watch and Wristwatch sale at the Knightsbridge saleroom, achieving the top price of £10,625 (£6,000 – 8,000)

There appeared to be something for everyone in the sale, with 91% of lots selling by value and a total of £568,025 being realised.

Almost every world-renowned watchmaker was represented at the sale, with Omega, Piaget, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacherin & Constantin all attracting interest and commanding excellent prices. A Breguet lady's 18K white gold and diamond set automatic wristwatch well exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £4,000 – 5,000 when the hammer finally fell at £8,125 after a lengthy exchange between an online and a saleroom bidder.

Penelope Morris, Head of the Department at Knightsbridge, commented: 'Our maiden auction for 2017 was filled with fascinating pieces, and followed the current trend of exceeding expectations both for the department and the bidders. It is a highly positive reflection of the current watch market, and we are thrilled to be starting the year with such a successful sale.'

The second most valuable lot on the day was the unique Benzinger 18K rose gold hand finished and finely engraved manual wind jump hour wristwatch Zeitsprung (£3,000-4,000), which achieved well over double its pre-sale estimate, eventually selling for £10,000.

An unexpected highlight of the sale was an 18k gold manual wind rectangular wristwatch from the watchmaker Vacheron & Constantin. Initially estimated at £700-900, the piece inspired a flurry of bids online, on the telephone and in the saleroom itself. After several minutes of bidding, it finally realised £5,000, over five times its estimate.

Unsurprisingly, a number of Patek Philippe watches performed very strongly throughout the sale. These included an 18k gold manual wind wristwatch Calatrava which realised £6,875 (£3,000-4,000) and an 18k rose gold tonneau form manual wind bracelet watch Gondolo which sold for £6,250 (£4,000-6,0000)

Other highlights included:

- A Piaget lady's 18K white gold and diamond set manual wind bracelet watch Ref: 9806 at £6,250 (£1,500 – 2,000)
- A Rolex stainless steel automatic bracelet watch Submariner, Ref: 5513 at £6,000 (£2,000 - 3,000)
- A Cartier rectangular 18k rose gold manual wind calendar wristwatch with power reserve Tank at £6,000 (£2,500 – 3,500)
