MORROCCO BOUND
STUDIO SELECTION BY ALBERTO MORROCCO LEADS BONHAMS PICTURE SALE IN EDINBURGH

Life Class (A Triptych) by the much-loved Scottish artist and teacher, Alberto Morrocco, leads a strong selection of work from his studio to be offered at Bonhams Pictures Sale in Edinburgh on 29 November. It is estimated at £30,000-50,000.

Alberto Morrocco R.S.A. R.S.W. (1917-1998) was one of the most distinctive British artists of the Post War period, and the selection of works in the sale reflects many aspects of this versatile and restlessly inquisitive painter.

Night Fishermen (£6,000-8,000) is one of several large-scale, powerful images of fishermen painted during the later 1960s, often in Sicily, at Fondachello. This nocturne explores the slow, methodical actions of two young local men preparing to set sail, as they had done for centuries, and their relationship with the vessel on which their livelihood depends.

The Basilica Di San Marco, Moonlight (£12,000-18,000) speaks to Morrocco's love of Venice, a city he painted many times throughout his life, and the subject of some of his most sought-after works.

Morrocco's love of the Scottish landscape is evident in Aberdeen, the Bay at Gourdon
(£3,000-5,000). He was particularly attached to the countryside around Aberdeen and Dundee, where he was Head of the School of Painting at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, now part of Dundee University.

Table Top Still Life (£3,000-5,000) is informed by his love of Bonnard and Picasso, with flowers, fruit and colourful cloths tumbling to the fore.

Bonhams Head of Scottish Art Chris Brickley, said: "Alberto Morrocco was one of the most accessible and joyous Scottish painters of the 20th century. An inspirational teacher, he left an extensive legacy, and his enduring popularity with collectors is a testament to his wonderful ability to infuse his paintings with exuberance and a love of life.'
